How NES and SNES save states work in eNES
A save state is a snapshot of the whole console at one moment, so loading it puts you back on that exact frame. In eNES you make one from the save icon in any game: free users get 1 manual save state plus 3 automatic saves per game, and Pro removes the manual limit.
What are save states?
The original console never had them. Games either had no saving, used passwords, or kept progress on a battery inside the cartridge. An emulator can go further: it copies the entire memory of the console, the picture and the sound, and can restore all of it later.
| Save state | In-game (battery) save | |
|---|---|---|
| When you can save | Any moment | Only where the game allows |
| What it keeps | The exact frame, mid-jump included | Progress the game chooses to store |
| Where it lives in eNES | Save States screen | Stored with the game's data |
| Removed by Delete All Save States | Yes | No |
How to make and load a save state in eNES
- Start a game and tap the save icon (a tray with a down arrow) at the top of the screen.
- The Save States screen opens. Tap New Save; the save appears with a thumbnail of the moment.
- To go back, open the same screen and tap the save. The game jumps to that moment.
- Long-press a save for Rename, Export or Delete. A name like 'before boss' makes it easy to find.
If you have no saves yet, the screen says No save states yet and Tap + to create your first save.
Automatic saves
With Auto-Save on Exit turned on in Settings, eNES makes a save point every time you leave a game. It keeps the 3 most recent automatic saves per game and removes older ones on its own. Turn on Load Last Save on Launch to start each game from where you stopped.
How many save states do you get?
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Manual save states | 1 | Unlimited |
| Automatic saves | 3 | 3 |
| Extra manual slot | +1 after a short ad | Not needed |
| iCloud sync | No | Yes |
When a free user tries a second manual save, eNES shows Save Limit Reached with two choices: Watch Ad for Extra Slot, which adds one more slot, or Upgrade to Pro. You can also overwrite by deleting the old save first.
Sync saves between iPhone and iPad
Pro subscribers can see sync status under iCloud Sync in Settings. Save states travel through your own iCloud account to every device signed in with the same Apple ID, and settings such as controls and audio follow along. Without Pro, save states stay on the device where you made them.
Tips and common mistakes
- Save before the risky part, not during it. A save state taken while falling will always load while falling.
- Keep the game's own save as well. A battery save is independent of save states and survives Delete All Save States.
- Deleting the game with Delete ROM removes its data too, and a save state cannot be loaded without its game.
- Want a quick undo instead of a save? Rewind steps back about 10 seconds (Pro, or one session after an ad).
