eNES: frequently asked questions

These are the questions people actually send in, before they install eNES and after a few sessions with it. No padding, just the direct answer.

Are emulators legal?
An emulator is just software that behaves like the original console; eNES itself holds no games and no console firmware. Whether a given file is lawful depends on where you live and how you got it. Stick to game files you have the right to use under the law where you live, such as homebrew distributed by its author.
Is eNES really free?
Yes. The download costs nothing and every game you import plays, full stop. What you get free is 1 manual save state per game, 1 active cheat, and ads. A monthly or yearly Pro subscription drops the ads and both limits; there is no one-time purchase.
Can I try a Pro feature without subscribing?
Yes, and it's the one free-to-play trick worth knowing. Tap a locked feature like rewind and eNES offers Watch Ad to Unlock; the feature stays on for that session after a short video. A full save slot gets the same deal through Watch Ad for Extra Slot.
Where are the ads, and do they interrupt games?
A banner sits at the bottom of the game list, and every so often a full-screen ad shows up, never less than 5 minutes apart. Ads only fire outside play, never interrupting an actual game. Pro removes all of it.
Why does eNES ask to track me?
That's the standard iOS prompt, nothing specific to eNES. It only decides whether ads can be personalized. Say no and the app runs exactly the same; the ads you see just won't be aimed at you.
Why does eNES want access to my photos?
Just to save the screenshots you take mid-game to your photo library. It asks the first time you save one, not before. Never take a screenshot, never see the prompt.
Do I need an account?
No sign-up, no login, nothing to lose if you reinstall. Your library and saves sit on the device, and if you pay for Pro, syncing runs through your own iCloud account, not ours.
How long can I rewind?
About 10 seconds, and here's the math behind it: eNES keeps 60 snapshots, one every 10 frames, at 60 frames a second — 60 x 10 / 60 = 10 seconds. It's a Pro feature, or free for one session after a short ad.
What speeds can I play at?
With Pro, yes: 2x, 3x or 4x forward, or 0.5x and 0.25x to slow things down. The speed button lives right on the game screen. 3x is the most useful setting for skipping grinding, while slow-mo sees little use for most people.
Can I record button combos?
Yes, and it costs nothing. Tap the film icon, open Macros, hit Record Macro. Four slots, and each one can loop; Stop & Save closes it out.
What is the TAS mode for?
It's for tool-assisted play — the kind where you record a whole run frame by frame with Frame Advance and the app keeps a re-record counter running the whole time. Finished runs land under Saved Movies and can be exported.
Can I play on my TV?
Yes. Start a game, connect an AirPlay receiver or an HDMI adapter, and the TV takes the picture while your phone keeps the touch controls. Pair a controller too and you can put the phone down entirely.
Do my saves sync between iPhone and iPad?
Only with Pro. It syncs save states and settings through iCloud, and you can check the status under iCloud Sync in Settings. Without Pro, a save made on the iPhone stays on the iPhone.
Can I change how the games look?
Yes. Settings has Color Palette for NES and CRT Filter for the scanline look; SNES games swap in color filters instead. The default look costs nothing — the rest needs Pro.
Can I change the on-screen buttons?
Yes, and most of it is free: under Personalization you can hide the skin, set its Opacity, pick a D-Pad Style and resize the controller. Only custom skin and background images need Pro.
Does eNES run on Mac or Android?
No. iPhone and iPad are it, with the Apple Watch app riding along. No Mac, no Android, no browser version, and nothing announced on that front.
How do I restore my Pro subscription on a new device?
Sign in with the same Apple ID, open the Pro screen, tap Restore Purchases. Manage Subscription is where you cancel or switch plans whenever you want.
Can I share my play stats?
Yes. eNES quietly tracks 20 local milestones — your first save state, your total hours, that sort of thing — and turns them into share cards for a game, your collection or a milestone. The free version's cards carry a small eNES watermark.
