How to play NES games on iPhone and iPad with eNES
To play NES games on iPhone, install an NES emulator such as eNES, import a .nes file you own through the Files app, and tap the game to play. No jailbreak, computer or account is needed.
What you need before you start
- An iPhone or iPad with eNES installed. It is free to download.
- A .nes file of a game you own, saved on the device, in iCloud Drive or in a cloud drive that appears in the Files app.
- Optional: a Bluetooth controller, if you want real buttons.
eNES does not include any game and will not tell you where to find one; the .nes file has to be one you have the right to use under the law where you live, such as homebrew distributed by its author.
How to play old NES games on iPhone, step by step
- Open eNES. An empty library shows No ROMs Yet.
- Tap Import ROM (or the + button) and pick your .nes file in the Files browser. It appears in the list with its name.
- Tap the game to open its page. You will see details such as the Mapper, Region and Play Time.
- Tap Play. The game starts with an on-screen D-pad, A, B, Select and Start.
- Tap the save icon at the top of the game screen, then New Save, whenever you want a point to return to.
- Leave the game any time. With Auto-Save on Exit turned on in Settings, eNES saves where you stopped.
Will my NES game run? Mappers explained
NES cartridges used extra chips, called mappers, to hold more graphics and code. An emulator has to recreate each chip, so compatibility depends on which mapper a game uses. The game page in eNES shows it under Mapper.
| Mapper family | Typical use |
|---|---|
| NROM | The earliest, smallest games |
| MMC1, MMC2, MMC3, MMC4, MMC5 | Most larger games, with battery saves on some |
| UNROM, CNROM, AxROM, GxROM | Simple bank-switching boards |
| VRC2, VRC4, VRC7 | Boards used mainly in games released in Japan |
| Others | Color Dreams, Camerica, TQROM, TxSROM, Namco 118 and a few more |
If a game uses a mapper eNES does not emulate, it will not start and the app shows Unable to load ROM. A damaged or modified file can cause the same message, so try another copy of the same file before giving up.
Make it play better
- Hold the phone sideways for a larger picture. In portrait the controls sit under the screen.
- Under Personalization, set the Opacity of the on-screen buttons and pick a D-Pad Style.
- Turn on Turbo A or Turbo B for games that ask you to hammer a button.
- Pick a different NES Color Palette in Settings if the colors look wrong to you. Extra palettes need Pro.
- Connect a controller: the touch controls step aside while it is connected if Hide With Controller is on.
Common mistakes
- Importing a .zip. eNES imports .nes files, so unzip the archive in the Files app first.
- Tapping Reset Game on the game page by mistake. It deletes all save states and battery saves for that game, and cannot be undone.
- Deleting the game while you still want its saves. Delete ROM also removes the data that belongs to it.
