GBA emulator black screen: what to check, in order
In iGBA a black screen after you tap a game nearly always traces back to the file, not the app. If the core refuses the file you get a Could not open this game alert; if there is no alert, check the file extension and the file size before anything else. There is no BIOS to hunt for, because iGBA has no BIOS setting.
Most black screens in this app come from three files, not from a bug: a download that had not finished, a zip someone renamed to .gba, and a game whose extension did not match its system. The app handles the first two with a message. The third, it does not.
Start with the alert
When the core will not take a file, iGBA shows Could not open this game with a one-line reason and an OK button that sends you back to the list. The text names the two usual suspects: the file may still be downloading from iCloud, or it may be a .zip renamed to .gba.
A file that has not downloaded yet sits on the phone at zero bytes. It looks fine in Files and still refuses to start. That one is easy to miss the first time.
No alert and a dark screen is the harder case. Table next.
What to suspect, in order
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Could not open this game alert | File still downloading from iCloud, or a zip renamed to .gba | Let Files finish the download, or unzip it and import the game file itself |
| Game will not run properly, no alert | Wrong extension: a GBA game named .gbc or .gb is loaded as a GBC or GB game | Rename it back to .gba, delete the game from the library, import it again |
| Picture goes wrong after adding a cheat | A code written for another version of the game (iGBA warns about some of these) | Remove the cheat from the Cheats list and start again |
| Import refused with The selected file is empty or corrupted. | Zero-byte file, usually an unfinished copy | Copy it again from the original, then Import ROMs |
| Game never appears in the games list | Extension not one of .gba, .gbc, .gb, or a zip with none inside | Check the name; unzip and look inside |
The extension row is a limit, worth stating plainly. iGBA picks the system from the extension, .gba for GBA and .gb or .gbc for the older two, and does not check that the contents agree. A misnamed file gets no friendly message from the app.
Do you need a BIOS file?
No. Looking for one before checking the file is a wasted detour: iGBA has nowhere to put a BIOS file and never asks for one.
Check the size in Files
Open the file's info in the Files app. GBA dumps are almost always a power of two in megabytes, since cartridges were built that way, and the cartridge limit is 32 MiB.
| Size | Bytes |
|---|---|
| 1 MiB | 1,048,576 |
| 4 MiB | 4,194,304 |
| 8 MiB | 8,388,608 |
| 16 MiB | 16,777,216 |
| 32 MiB | 33,554,432 |
Say Files shows 4.7 MB for something named .gba. That is 4.48 MiB, not a size a cartridge comes in, so a zip or a partial download is worth suspecting before blaming the emulator. It is only a hint, since some good files have odd sizes.
What to do, step by step
- Wait for any iCloud download to finish, then try the game again.
- If you got Could not open this game, unzip on your side and import the game file itself, or import the .zip as it is with Import ROMs; iGBA unpacks .zip, .7z and .gz archives that contain .gba, .gbc or .gb files.
- Compare the name's extension with the system the game belongs to. Fix it, delete the game with Delete ROM File, import it again.
- Remove any cheat you added just before it went dark.
- Try a second game. If that one runs, the first file is the problem and the app is fine.
When this check does not solve it
A truncated file that is not empty and not zipped can still give you a dark screen and no explanation. The size check is the only test available here. If a second copy from the source does the same, it is the file.
This applies to the free version and to Pro alike; nothing here is locked behind an upgrade. iGBA is free to download and shows ads in the free version.
