How to play GBA and GBC games on Apple Watch
iGBA has an Apple Watch app that runs games on the Watch itself: sync a game from your iPhone, then tap Play on Watch. It is a beta, so it suits short sessions, and some games run slower or not at all.
How GBA on Apple Watch works
The Watch app is a separate, small player. It does not mirror your iPhone screen: the game file is copied to the Watch and emulated there, so once a game is synced, the Watch can play it without your iPhone nearby.
GB, GBC and GBA games are supported. The app states it plainly: Apple Watch emulation is experimental. Audio is disabled, controls are basic, and performance depends on the game and the Watch model.
What you need
- An iPhone with iGBA and at least one game already imported.
- A paired Apple Watch with the iGBA Watch app installed.
- Watch companion sync switched on in the iPhone app.
How to sync a game and play it on the Watch
- On the iPhone, open iGBA, tap Settings, then Apple Watch, and check that Watch companion sync is on. If you change it, restart the app.
- Open iGBA on the Watch. Your library from the iPhone appears in the list.
- Tap a game and tap Sync for Apple Watch. The game is copied to the Watch; keep both devices close until it finishes.
- When the screen shows ROM ready on this Watch, tap Play on Watch.
- To free space later, open the game again and tap Remove from Watch.
Use the Digital Crown as buttons
Every tap on a Watch screen covers part of the game. In the Watch app's settings, the Digital Crown option lets a turn of the Crown press a pair of buttons for you:
| Option | Turning the Crown |
|---|---|
| Off | Does nothing during a game |
| A / B | Presses A one way and B the other |
| Up / Down | Moves up or down, handy in menus and lists |
The same settings screen has a button size option: small keeps more of the picture visible, large is easier to tap.
Honest limits
- It is a beta: if a game does not start or feels slow, keep playing it on the iPhone.
- There is no sound on the Watch: audio is disabled while a game runs there.
- The screen is tiny, so games with a lot of text or small details are hard to read.
- Emulation uses a lot of battery on a Watch; plan for short sessions.
- The Watch app has its own library view; it is not a remote screen for the iPhone.
